How to convert a video to GIF

Turn any part of a video into a high-quality animated GIF. Trim the clip on a filmstrip timeline, crop it to square or vertical, change the speed, play it in reverse or as a boomerang, add meme captions and filters, and control size, frame rate and colors with a live file-size estimate. Your video is converted in the browser and never uploaded.

Drop a video, drag the trim handles over the filmstrip to pick the moment (or type exact start and end times), and press Convert to GIF. The preview above the timeline already shows the crop, speed, filter and captions you chose, so the GIF looks exactly like what you see. Frames are decoded straight from the file with WebCodecs, which is far faster and more accurate than recording the screen.

Detailed guide

Settings for the perfect GIF size

GIF files grow with width × height × frames, so the same clip can be 500 KB or 15 MB. Start with 480 px at 12 fps and 128 colors, check the estimate, then adjust. The Smaller file palette builds one shared palette for the whole GIF, which cuts size and removes color flicker between frames; Best colors builds a palette per frame for maximum accuracy.

Boomerang, reverse and speed

Boomerang plays the clip forward and then backward for a seamless loop, the classic Instagram effect. Reverse plays it backwards. Speed lets you make a slow-motion GIF from a quick moment (0.25× to 0.75×) or squeeze a long action into a short GIF (up to 4×) without changing the file size much. Combine them with Loop forever for reaction GIFs, or Play once for product demos.

Crop and caption

Choose 1:1 for chat apps and feeds, 9:16 for stories, 16:9 for wide screens or 4:5 for Instagram posts. Zoom in and drag the preview to choose what stays in frame. Turn on meme captions to add classic white Impact text with a black outline at the top and bottom, then apply a filter such as grayscale, sepia, vivid or vintage.

GIF or MP4?

GIFs play everywhere without a play button, but they are limited to 256 colors and are much bigger than video. For anything longer than about 10 seconds, or when you need sound, a short MP4 is the better choice; the video looper and resizer can produce one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an MP4 to a GIF?

Drop the MP4, drag the trim handles over the part you want, adjust the size and frame rate if needed and click Convert to GIF. The finished GIF can be previewed and downloaded immediately.

Is the video uploaded to a server?

No. Frames are decoded and the GIF is encoded entirely in your browser, so your video stays private.

Will the GIF have a watermark?

No. The GIF contains only your video frames and any captions you add yourself.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 60 seconds of source video. GIFs get large quickly, so 2 to 10 second clips give the best quality-to-size ratio.

How do I make the GIF file smaller?

Lower the width (480 px or less), reduce the frame rate to 10 to 12 fps, use fewer colors and choose the Smaller file palette. Trimming the clip helps the most.

Can I make a boomerang or reverse GIF?

Yes. Under Playback choose Boomerang (forward then backward) or Reverse. You can also change the speed from 0.25× to 4×.

Can I add text to the GIF?

Yes. Turn on Meme captions to add top and bottom text in the classic outlined Impact style.

Does the GIF include sound?

No. The GIF format cannot hold audio. If you need sound, export a short MP4 with the video looper or speed changer instead.

Why is my GIF too big for Discord?

Free Discord accounts allow files up to 10 MB. Reduce the width to 320 to 480 px, use 10 to 12 fps and the Smaller file palette, and the size estimate will show when you are under the limit.
