Check a video's codec, frame rate and bitrate

See everything inside a video file: container, resolution, exact frame rate, bitrate, codec with profile and level, bit depth, HDR and color space, rotation, key-frame interval, audio channels and sample rate, plus embedded tags such as title, camera model, recording date and GPS location. Check compatibility, compare several files, export the report and remove metadata losslessly before sharing.

Drop a video and the report appears in a second or two. The tool reads the container directly (MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, WebM and more) rather than guessing from the browser, so you get the real codec string (for example avc1.64001F = H.264 High @ Level 3.1), the measured frame rate, average bitrate per track and the key-frame interval. Nothing is uploaded: the file is parsed on your device.

Features

  • Codec, codec string, profile, level and bit depth
  • Exact frame rate, frame count and key-frame interval

  • HDR, color primaries, transfer, matrix and range
  • Rotation, pixel aspect ratio and display size
  • Embedded tags: title, encoder, camera, date, GPS location (with map link)
  • Compatibility check for iPhone, browsers and social uploads
  • Compare up to 6 files side by side
  • Export as JSON, CSV or TXT; remove metadata losslessly

How to use Video Metadata Viewer

  1. 1

    Drop a video

MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and more. Add several files to compare them.

  2. 2

    Read the report

Resolution, fps, codec, bitrate, HDR, audio and every embedded tag appear instantly.

  3. 3

    Check compatibility

See whether it plays everywhere and meets social upload requirements.

  4. 4

    Export or clean

Copy or download the report (JSON, CSV, TXT), or click Remove metadata for a clean copy.

Common use cases

  • Check a video's frame rate, resolution and bitrate before editing
  • Find out why a video will not play on a device
  • Verify an export meets YouTube, Instagram or TikTok requirements
  • Remove GPS location before sharing a video publicly
  • Compare camera settings across several clips
  • Document deliverables for clients with a CSV report

Detailed guide

What the codec names mean

The codec decides where a video will play. H.264 with AAC audio in an MP4 is the universal choice; HEVC saves space but is not supported everywhere; VP9 and AV1 are efficient web codecs.

CodecAlso calledPlays on
H.264AVC, avc1Everything: phones, TVs, browsers, editors
H.265HEVC, hvc1/hev1iPhone, Safari, recent Windows/Android; limited in Chrome/Firefox
VP9vp09Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Android; newer Safari
AV1av01Modern browsers and newer devices

Find hidden metadata and GPS location

Phones and cameras often embed the recording date, device make and model, software version and the exact GPS coordinates where the video was filmed. The viewer lists every tag it finds and, when a location is present, shows the coordinates with a map link and a privacy warning. One click on Remove metadata creates a copy without these tags; the picture and sound are copied untouched, so there is no quality loss.

Compatibility and upload checks

The compatibility panel tells you at a glance whether the file will play everywhere, on iPhone and Safari, in Chrome and Firefox, and whether it suits Instagram, TikTok and YouTube uploads (codec, frame rate, resolution, audio). Add more files to compare resolution, fps, codecs, bitrate, duration and size in one table, which is handy when choosing the best export or checking a batch from a camera.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a video's frame rate and resolution?

Drop the file into the viewer. Resolution, exact frame rate, frame count and duration are shown at the top and in the Video track table.

How do I know if my video is H.264 or H.265 (HEVC)?

Look at Codec in the video track: it shows H.264 / AVC or H.265 / HEVC, plus the codec string, profile and level.

Can it show where a video was recorded?

Yes, if the camera saved GPS coordinates. They appear under Location found with a link to open them on a map.

How do I remove metadata from a video?

Click Remove metadata. A copy is created without title, camera and location tags; the video and audio streams are copied untouched, so quality does not change.

Is this a MediaInfo alternative?

Yes. It covers the details most people use MediaInfo for (codec, profile, fps, bitrate, color, audio, tags) without installing anything.

Can I compare several videos?

Yes. Add up to six files and a comparison table lists resolution, fps, codecs, bitrate, duration and size.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The file is read locally in your browser and never leaves your device.

Which formats are supported?

MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, WebM and most other common containers. Very unusual formats may show only basic file information.
