Start from the best frame in your video

Make a click-worthy thumbnail from your own footage. The smart frame picker scans the video for the sharpest, best-exposed moments, then you add bold text, logos or face cut-outs, gradients and color tweaks in a layer editor. Export a YouTube-ready 1280 × 720 JPG under 2 MB, or sizes for Shorts, Instagram, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitch and podcasts.

Thumbnails built from a real, expressive frame of the video tend to earn more clicks than generic stock images. Load your clip and press Find the best frames: the tool samples the whole video, scores each frame for sharpness, exposure and colorfulness, and shows the eight strongest, spread across the video. Click one to use it, or scrub the slider to pick any moment yourself.

Detailed guide

Design with layers

Add as many text and image layers as you need. Text layers support any font, size, color, outline thickness, drop shadow, a solid highlight box behind the words and uppercase. Image layers are perfect for logos, a transparent PNG of your face, arrows or product shots. Drag any layer on the canvas, rotate it, duplicate it and change its order. Templates give you proven layouts in one click.

Thumbnail sizes for every platform

Pick the target size and the canvas changes shape; your layers stay in place relative to the frame.

Make it readable at small sizes

Most viewers see your thumbnail at about 168 to 360 pixels wide, so the feed preview shows it at those sizes. Use three to five words, a thick outline and a gradient overlay behind the text, and keep important elements away from the bottom-right corner, where YouTube draws the video length (the safe-zone badge shows exactly where). A small boost to contrast and saturation helps the image stand out in a busy feed.

Export under YouTube's 2 MB limit

When you download a JPG, the quality is lowered step by step until the file fits under 2 MB, so YouTube never rejects the upload. PNG keeps maximum quality for other platforms, and WebP produces the smallest files for websites. Nothing is uploaded and no watermark is added.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), under 2 MB, as JPG, PNG or GIF. This tool exports exactly that size and compresses JPGs to stay under 2 MB.

How does Find the best frames work?

It samples dozens of frames across your video and scores each for sharpness, exposure and color, then shows the eight best, spread across the whole video.

Can I add my own logo or a photo of my face?

Yes. Add an image layer with a PNG (transparent PNGs work best), then drag, resize and rotate it, and add a drop shadow.

Can I make thumbnails for Shorts, Instagram or podcasts?

Yes. Choose from nine sizes, including 1080 × 1920 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok, Instagram square and portrait, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitch and a 3000 × 3000 podcast cover.

Will it stay under YouTube's 2 MB limit?

Yes. JPG exports are automatically compressed until they fit within 2 MB.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is decoded and the thumbnail is drawn inside your browser.

Does it add a watermark?

No. The exported image contains only your frame and the layers you added.
