How to extract a frame from a video

Extract frames from any video as full-resolution PNG, JPG or WebP images. Capture one exact frame with frame-by-frame stepping, or batch-extract a frame every few seconds, a set number of evenly spaced frames, every single frame, or one frame per scene change. Download them one by one, as a ZIP or as a contact sheet, all without uploading the video.

Drop an MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM file and scrub to the moment you want. The , and . keys (or the arrow buttons) step exactly one frame at a time, using the video's real frame rate, so you can land on the sharpest frame of a fast movement. Press C or Capture this frame and the still is saved at the video's native resolution: a 1080p clip gives a 1920 × 1080 image and a 4K clip gives a 3840 × 2160 image. Nothing is upscaled and no watermark is added.

Features

  • Frame-accurate stepping with keyboard shortcuts (C to capture)
  • Batch modes: every N seconds, N evenly spaced frames, every frame, scene changes
  • Automatic scene-change (shot cut) detection with adjustable sensitivity
  • Full native resolution, or scaled to 75%, 50% or 25%
  • PNG, JPG or WebP with quality control
  • Select frames, then download a ZIP or a labelled contact sheet
  • Copy any frame straight to the clipboard
  • Up to 500 frames per run, decoded faster than real time
  • Private: the video never leaves your device

Detailed guide

Four ways to batch-extract frames

Batch extraction decodes the video directly with WebCodecs instead of playing it, so even hundreds of frames come out in seconds. Pick the mode that matches your job and narrow the range with the filmstrip timeline if you only need part of the clip.

ModeWhat you getBest for
Every N secondsOne frame per interval (0.1 s to 60 s)Storyboards, timelapse stills, documentation
N framesA fixed number spread evenly across the rangeThumbnails to choose from, quick overviews
Every frameAll frames in the range (e.g. 30 per second)Animation reference, rotoscoping, ML datasets
Scene changesOne frame at the start of each shotSummarising edited videos, shot lists, trailers

Scene detection: one frame per shot

Scene-change mode compares every frame with the one before it and saves a frame whenever the picture changes sharply, which is what happens at a cut. Raise the sensitivity to also catch softer transitions, lower it for long takes with lots of camera motion. It is the fastest way to turn a trailer, vlog or lecture into a visual summary or a shot list.

PNG, JPG or WebP?

PNG is lossless and best for editing or pixel-perfect references but produces the largest files. JPG is the smallest and works everywhere. WebP gives near-PNG quality at JPG-like sizes on modern browsers and websites. You can also scale frames down to 75%, 50% or 25% to save space when you only need previews.

FormatQualityTypical size (1080p frame)
PNGLossless2 to 4 MB
JPG (92%)Visually lossless300 to 600 KB
WebP (92%)Visually lossless200 to 450 KB

ZIP downloads and contact sheets

Every extracted frame lands in a gallery where you can preview it full size, copy it to the clipboard, save it alone or tick it for a batch. Download all selected frames as a single ZIP with timestamped file names, or generate a contact sheet: one image with the frames in a grid (3 to 8 columns), each labelled with its timestamp, which is handy for reviews, client approvals and film study.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract a frame from a video without losing quality?

Load the video, step to the exact frame and capture it as PNG. The image is saved at the video's native resolution with no compression beyond what is already in the video.

Can I extract every frame of a video?

Yes. Choose the Every frame mode and set the range. Up to 500 frames are saved per run; for longer clips run it again on the next section.

How does scene-change detection work?

The tool compares each frame with the previous one and saves a frame whenever the picture changes sharply, which happens at a cut between shots. The sensitivity slider controls how big a change counts as a new scene.

What resolution are the extracted frames?

The same as the video, for example 1920 × 1080 for 1080p or 3840 × 2160 for 4K. You can optionally scale them down to 75%, 50% or 25%.

Can I download all frames at once?

Yes. Select the frames you want and download them as a single ZIP file, or create a contact sheet image that shows them all in a grid with timestamps.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Decoding and image encoding happen inside your browser, so the video never leaves your device and works offline once the page has loaded.

Which video formats are supported?

Anything your browser can decode: MP4 (H.264, H.265 on supported devices), MOV, WebM (VP8, VP9, AV1) and MKV. If a file will not open, convert it to MP4 (H.264) first.

How do I step one frame at a time?

Use the , and . keys or the arrow buttons under the player. The step size matches the video's actual frame rate, which the tool detects automatically.
