How to change the speed of a video

Speed up a video up to 16× for a time-lapse or slow it down to 0.1× for slow motion, with natural-sounding voices thanks to pitch-preserving time-stretch. Reverse the clip, change only part of it, and choose the frame rate and resolution. Exports render faster than real time and download as MP4 or WebM, all in your browser.

Load a video, pick a preset (0.25×, 0.5×, 1.5×, 2×, 4×, 8×…) or drag the slider to any value between 0.1× and 16×, and the preview plays at that speed immediately. Choose how the sound should behave, then click Export. The tool decodes every frame, retimes it and encodes a new MP4, so the result is smooth, has the correct duration and plays in any player. A 1-minute clip at 2× becomes 30 seconds; at 0.5× it becomes 2 minutes.

Detailed guide

Keep voices natural when speeding up

Speeding up audio the simple way raises the pitch and makes people sound like chipmunks. Natural voice mode uses a WSOLA time-stretch algorithm that changes the tempo while keeping the original pitch, so a lecture at 1.5× or a podcast clip at 2× still sounds like the same person. Pitch shift mode does the opposite on purpose for comedy or tape-style effects, and No sound gives silent time-lapses.

Slow motion that stays smooth

Slowing a 30 fps clip to 0.5× leaves only 15 new frames per second, so each frame is shown twice. For the smoothest slow motion, start from footage shot at 60, 120 or 240 fps (most phones offer a slo-mo mode) and keep the output at 30 or 60 fps. The Auto frame-rate setting matches your source, up to 60 fps.

Reverse and partial speed changes

Turn on Play in reverse to make the clip run backwards, including its sound, for rewind effects and fun social clips. Enable Only part of the video to speed up or slow down just one section, which is useful for skipping the boring middle of a recording or focusing on the key moment.

More editing tools

Frequently asked questions

How fast or slow can I make a video?

Anywhere from 0.1× (ten times slower) to 16× (sixteen times faster), with presets for the common speeds.

Will the voice sound like a chipmunk when I speed up a video?

Not in Natural voice mode, which time-stretches the audio and keeps the original pitch. Choose Pitch shift if you want the chipmunk or deep-voice effect.

How long does exporting take?

Usually less than the length of the video. Frames are decoded and encoded directly with WebCodecs rather than recorded in real time.

Can I reverse a video?

Yes. Turn on Play in reverse; the picture and sound both play backwards. You can combine it with any speed.

Can I change the speed of only one part?

Yes. Enable Only part of the video and drag the range on the timeline; the export contains just that section at the new speed.

What file format do I get?

MP4 (H.264 + AAC) by default, which plays on every device, or WebM if you prefer.

Does slowing down reduce quality?

Resolution stays the same, but a normal 30 fps clip slowed to 0.5× repeats frames. Footage filmed at a high frame rate gives the smoothest slow motion.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Everything is processed locally in your browser.
