How to rotate a video that plays sideways

Fix a sideways or upside-down video, mirror a selfie clip or straighten a tilted horizon. Rotate by 90, 180 or 270 degrees, flip horizontally or vertically, fine-tune the angle with auto-zoom, and trim if needed. Choose Instant mode for a lossless fix in about a second, or re-encode for maximum compatibility.

Phones store videos in the orientation the sensor was held and add a rotation flag; when that flag is missing or wrong, the video plays sideways or upside down. Load the file, press 90° right or 90° left until the preview is upright, and export. Rotating by 90° or 270° swaps width and height, so a 1920 × 1080 landscape clip becomes a 1080 × 1920 portrait one.

Detailed guide

Instant (lossless) or re-encode?

Instant mode rewrites only the orientation metadata: the picture and sound are copied untouched, so it finishes in about a second with zero quality loss. Re-encode mode rotates every pixel, which works even in old players and on upload sites that ignore orientation flags. Straightening always needs re-encoding.

Re-encodeFaster than real timeVisually lossless (High/Best)Yes, including old TVs and editors

Mirror or flip a video

Flip horizontally to mirror a clip, for example selfie footage where text appears reversed, or to change which way a subject faces. Flip vertically to turn a clip upside down. Rotation and flips can be combined, and Reset all brings you back to the original.

Straighten a tilted horizon

The Straighten slider rotates the video by fractions of a degree, up to ±45°. With Auto-zoom on, the tool zooms in just enough that no black corners appear, the same technique professional editors use. Turn it off to keep the full picture with black corners.

Next steps

Once the orientation is right you may want a different shape for social media, or to trim and loop the clip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a video and save it?

Load the video, press 90° right or 90° left until it is upright, then click Export and download the new file.

Does rotating reduce quality?

Not in Instant mode, which only changes the orientation flag and copies the video untouched. Re-encode mode is visually lossless at High or Best quality.

Why does my video still look sideways in some apps?

Some old players ignore the orientation flag that Instant mode writes. Export again with Re-encode to bake the rotation into the pixels.

Can I rotate and flip together?

Yes. Combine any rotation with a horizontal or vertical flip, and optionally straighten the angle.

How do I fix a slightly tilted video?

Use the Straighten slider (up to ±45°). Auto-zoom crops in slightly so there are no black corners.

Is the audio kept?

Yes. The soundtrack is copied untouched.

Is the video uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser.
