A seating chart that adapts to your room and your rules
Every classroom is laid out differently, so this generator lets you choose the shape of the room, not just a fixed grid. Rows suit direct instruction and tests; group pods cluster desks in fours for collaborative work; paired desks work for buddy activities; and the U-shape opens the floor for discussion. On top of the layout, you set the rules: mark two students to keep apart and the shuffle will avoid seating them next to each other, mark a pair to keep together and it seats them side by side, and star anyone who needs the front row. The tool tries hundreds of arrangements behind the scenes and keeps the one that best satisfies every rule.
One tool for every class you teach
Instead of juggling separate files, save a chart for each class or period and switch between them with a click — your rosters, rules, and layouts are all remembered. Color-code students into groups for balanced teams or ability grouping, mark anyone absent so they are left out of today's arrangement, and lock the desks you have already perfected so the next shuffle leaves them untouched. Made a change you did not like? A single Undo steps it back.
Print, hand off, or export
When the chart looks right, print it or export a tidy, dated PDF — perfect to leave for a substitute teacher. Need the data elsewhere? Download a CSV with the row, seat, and student for every desk. Choose whether names show as first name, full name, or initials to fit more students per desk. Everything is saved in your browser, so your classes are waiting for you next time with nothing uploaded to a server.
