Three kinds of Minecraft name tag

"Name tag" means three different things in Minecraft, and this tool has a mode for each. The floating nameplate is the label above a player or a named mob. The wooden sign is the placeable board used for spawn messages, shop labels and rules. The item name tag is the tooltip text you see when you hover a renamed item, including the Name Tag item itself after you rename it on an anvil. They use different backgrounds, line limits and default styles, so pick the one that matches where your text will appear.

Minecraft colour codes: the 16 colours

Minecraft has 16 built-in text colours, numbered 0–9 and a–f. In vanilla the code starts with the section sign (§), which you can't type in chat, so most servers and plugins accept an ampersand (&) instead and convert it. Both forms work in this generator: type §c or &c and the text turns red immediately. The hex values below are the exact colours the game uses, and they are the swatches in the colour picker.

Format codes and hex colour formats

Format codes change the style rather than the colour, and a colour code placed after them resets the formatting in vanilla, so put colour first and format second (&c&l, not &l&c). For colours outside the 16, Java Edition 1.16 and later supports full hex colour, but different servers expect it written in different ways. This tool reads the & codes, &#RRGGBB and the &x form and renders them live; it does not read MiniMessage tags, which are listed here for reference only.

Rank prefixes and gradient names for servers

Add a coloured rank prefix like [Admin], [VIP] or [MVP+] from the built-in preset list, or type your own and give it a separate colour from the name. Turn on gradient text to blend two colours across the name, or rainbow for a full-spectrum ramp. When the design looks right, click Copy code: the tool builds the matching colour-code string, using a & code for game colours and &#RRGGBB for custom hex, ready to paste into a rank plugin, a sign, a scoreboard or a chat prefix. Gradients render in the image; for a per-letter gradient in chat, your server plugin needs to support hex.

Minecraft sign generator: wood types, lines and glowing text

Wooden Sign mode draws a plank board with up to four lines of text in oak, spruce, birch, dark oak, acacia or crimson, with left, centre or right alignment. In game the limit on each line is its pixel width, not a fixed character count: roughly 15 average-width characters fit, narrow letters like i and l let you fit more, and wide ones like W and M fewer. Turn on glowing text to match a sign treated with a glow ink sac, which makes the text bright and readable in the dark. Colour and format codes work on every line, so you can plan a coloured shop or rules sign before you place it.

Item name tags and the anvil

In Java Edition you rename an item by putting it in an anvil, typing up to 50 characters and paying the experience cost, which is at least one level. The renamed item then shows its name in italics on hover. That is how you make a Name Tag item for a pet or mob: rename it on the anvil, then use it on the animal. Item Name Tag mode previews that italic tooltip so you can check the length and colours before spending the levels, or use the image in a guide or thumbnail.

Java vs Bedrock colour codes

The 16 colours (§0–§f), bold, italic, obfuscated and reset work on both editions. The main differences are underline, strikethrough and hex. Bedrock has no hex or RGB text colour, and it uses §m and §n as extra colour codes (for its material colours) rather than strikethrough and underline, so avoid those two codes on Bedrock servers. Bedrock also adds colours Java doesn't have, such as §g (Minecoin gold). This generator follows Java Edition rendering, which is also what most thumbnails and server banners show.

Using your nameplate in thumbnails, banners and Discord

Export on a transparent background and the nameplate drops onto a video thumbnail, channel banner or Discord post with no box around it. Use 4× for a standard 1280×720 thumbnail and 6–8× for large banners or print, since pixel fonts stay sharp only when scaled by whole numbers. Copy image puts the PNG straight on your clipboard for pasting into an editor, or add a grass, stone, deepslate, netherrack, end stone or sky background for a ready-made scene.

About the font

Everything is drawn with Monocraft, a free, open-source (SIL Open Font License) pixel font designed to look like Minecraft's text. It is bundled with the tool and loads automatically, so there is nothing to install. Minecraft's own font belongs to Mojang and can't be redistributed, which is why a faithful open equivalent is used.
