A knee-length dress in a medium size takes roughly 2.5–3 yards of 45-inch fabric, and less on a wider bolt. Enter the garment, your size, and the fabric width and the calculator gives a yardage with a breakdown, adding extra for nap or a pattern repeat. When in doubt, buy a quarter to half yard more.

Wider fabric goes further, so you need less length. In the Convert mode, enter the yardage and the two widths and the tool multiplies by the width ratio (old width ÷ new width). For example, 3 yards at 45" is about 2.25 yards at 60". It is an area-based estimate — add a little for one-way naps.

Backing needs about 4 inches of overhang on each side, and once the quilt is wider than your fabric you sew panels together. Quilt mode adds the overhang, works out how many panels of your fabric width are required, and totals the yardage, plus a separate binding estimate from the quilt's perimeter.

Multiply the rod width by a fullness ratio (2× for a gathered look, 2.5–3× for fuller), divide by the fabric width to get the number of panels, then add header and hem allowances to the drop for the cut length. Curtains mode does all of this and rounds the cut length up to full pattern repeats.

A pattern repeat is the vertical distance before a print starts again. To match the motif across seams you buy extra so pieces can be shifted to line up. Enter the repeat in inches and the calculator adds an allowance based on the garment's major pieces.

For cloth in Pakistan and India, 1 gaz (gaj) is standardised to 36 inches — the same as 1 yard, which is about 0.9144 metre. So 1 gaz ≈ 0.91 m, and 1 metre ≈ 1.09 gaz. Switch the unit toggle to Gaz and every result, including garment yardage, is shown in gaz.

It can. Natural fibres like cotton and linen shrink on the first wash, so enter a shrinkage percentage (commonly 3–10%) and the tool increases the estimate to match. Pre-washing your fabric before cutting is still the safest way to avoid surprises.
