Detailed guide

Templates for every popular meme format

Start from the classic top and bottom text layout, a movie-style subtitle bar, the modern caption-above-image style, the two-panel approve and reject format, an expanding brain ladder, a before and after split, a four-panel grid or a clean quote card. Each template is fully editable and keeps the photo you already uploaded, so you can try several formats on the same image in seconds. Multi-panel layouts let you place a different image in each panel by dropping several files at once.

No watermark, fully private

Unlike many meme sites, there is no watermark on your download and no account to create. The whole editor runs on an HTML canvas in your browser, so your images never leave your device. That also makes it safe to caption private photos for a family or friends group chat. Save as PNG for the sharpest text, JPG or WebP for smaller files, or copy the finished meme to your clipboard and paste it straight into WhatsApp, Discord, Slack or X.

Why meme text looks the way it does

The classic meme style uses a heavy condensed sans-serif, traditionally Impact, in white capitals with a thick black outline. The outline is what keeps the text readable on any background, from a bright sky to a dark room, without a caption box. Keep the top line for the setup and the bottom line for the punchline, and aim for a handful of words on each: long captions shrink and become hard to read on a phone. Text size is measured against the image width, so a caption stays legible whether you start from a small screenshot or a large photo.

Sizes for every platform

Choose Auto to match your picture, or set a canvas of 1:1 for Instagram and Facebook feeds, 4:5 for Instagram portrait posts, 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails and X, 9:16 for Stories, Reels and TikTok, or 3:4 for Pinterest. Use the 2× export for extra-sharp results on high-resolution screens, or the half-size export to keep files small for chat apps with strict upload limits.

Using images responsibly

Most meme templates are frames from films, TV or photos taken by someone else. Sharing a meme for commentary or humour is common, but using another person's photo in advertising, merchandise or anything that implies they endorse you can break copyright or personality rights. Use your own photos or openly licensed images for commercial posts, and avoid captions that target or harass private individuals.

Frequently asked questions

Does the meme have a watermark?

No. Your download is clean, with no watermark and no account required.

How do I make a meme online for free?

Open the generator, choose a template or upload your own image, click the text to type your captions, adjust the font and colours, and press Download. The whole process is free, needs no signup and takes under a minute.

What font do memes use?

The classic meme font is Impact in white capitals with a black outline, which is the default here. You can also switch to Anton, Bebas Neue, Bangers, Comic Neue, Montserrat and a dozen more, and apply one-click styles such as Subtitle, Comic and Neon.

Can I use my own image to make a meme?

Yes. Upload, drag and drop, paste from your clipboard or load an image by URL. Photos, screenshots, drawings and GIF frames all work, and the image is processed in your browser so nothing is uploaded to a server.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The meme is drawn on a canvas in your browser and never sent anywhere, which makes it safe for private photos.

How do I make a meme with top and bottom text?

Choose the Classic template, or upload your image, then edit the top and bottom captions. You can also use the Caption ideas list for instant joke starters and change the text, font and outline to suit.

Can I make a two-panel or four-panel meme?

Yes. The Canvas tab offers 2, 3 and 4 stacked panels, a side-by-side layout and a 2×2 grid, and the approve/reject, expanding brain, before/after and four-panel templates are ready to use. Drop several images at once to fill the panels.

Can I move, resize and rotate the text?

Yes. Drag any caption to move it, pull the corner handle to resize it, use the dot above it to rotate it, and use the arrow keys for pixel nudges. Snap guides help you center text, and Alt turns snapping off.

Can I add emoji, arrows and stickers?

Yes. Add emoji, circles, boxes, arrows and your own overlay images from the Add tab. Each one is a layer you can move, resize, rotate, fade, lock or hide.

What size should a meme be for Instagram, TikTok or X?

Use 1:1 for Instagram and Facebook feeds, 4:5 for Instagram portrait, 9:16 for Stories, Reels and TikTok, and 16:9 for YouTube and X. Pick the canvas shape in the Canvas tab, or leave it on Auto to match your picture.

Can I undo a mistake?

Yes. Undo and redo cover every edit, with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y shortcuts, so you can experiment without losing your work.

Which formats can I download?

PNG for the sharpest text, JPG for small files and WebP for modern, compact images. You can export at half, standard or double size, copy the meme to your clipboard, or share it directly on devices that support sharing.

Is the meme generator free with no watermark or signup?

Yes. It is completely free, adds no watermark, and needs no account, so you can make and download memes instantly.
