Detailed guide

Works both ways

Switch to salary-to-hourly mode to find the true hourly value of a fixed salary, handy for deciding whether overtime, a raise or a contract rate is worth it. Reduce the weeks-per-year figure to account for unpaid holidays. All values are gross (before tax); combine with a tax calculator for take-home pay.

The formula and the assumptions

Annual salary is the hourly rate multiplied by hours per week multiplied by paid weeks per year. The common shortcut is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is about $52,000 a year, and a quick estimate is to double the hourly rate and add three zeros. If you take unpaid time off, reduce the weeks: 48 paid weeks at 40 hours is 1,920 hours. Going the other way, divide the salary by 2,080 to get an hourly equivalent, which helps compare a salaried offer with hourly or contract work.

Comparing employee and contractor pay

An hourly rate as a contractor isn't directly comparable to the same rate as an employee. Contractors usually pay their own payroll taxes (in the US, self-employment tax adds about 7.65% that an employer would otherwise cover), and they don't get paid holidays, sick leave, health insurance or retirement contributions. They also have unbilled hours for admin and finding work. A common rule of thumb is that a contract rate needs to be 1.25 to 1.5 times the employee hourly rate to end up with similar total pay. Check your local tax rules for exact figures.
