Material needs are a volume problem: area times depth. The calculator turns your measurements into cubic yards and meters so you're ordering by the unit suppliers actually sell, instead of guessing and over- or under-buying.

Suppliers price gravel and sand by the ton and sell soil and mulch by the bag. Converting volume into estimated weight and bag count means you can place an order or fill a cart without a second round of math at the store.
Real projects have uneven ground, compaction, and waste, so it's wise to add roughly 5-10% to any estimate. Use the figures as an accurate baseline, then round up so you don't run short mid-job.
