Urgency vs importance
The matrix's power is separating two things we usually confuse: urgency (it demands attention now) and importance (it moves you toward your goals). Many urgent tasks aren't important, and many important ones aren't urgent — seeing them split apart changes how you spend your day.
What each quadrant means
Do First is urgent and important — handle it now. Schedule is important but not urgent — the growth work most people neglect. Delegate is urgent but not important — hand it off. Eliminate is neither — drop it. Sorting honestly is the whole exercise.
The value of eliminating
The Eliminate quadrant feels uncomfortable but is the biggest time-saver. Admitting that some tasks are neither urgent nor important frees hours for the Schedule quadrant, where meaningful long-term progress actually happens.
