Pick the right setting for the job

Different jobs need different light. Tracing needs maximum brightness and something that won't react when paper or a pencil touches the glass. Video calls look best with a slightly warm, soft light rather than harsh blue-white. Reading at night is easier on the eyes with a warm, dim screen. Color temperature explained: warm vs cool white

White light isn't one color. It's measured in Kelvin (K): around 1900K is the orange glow of a candle, 2700K matches a warm household bulb, 4000-5000K is neutral, 5500-6500K is daylight, and anything above 7000K looks cool and bluish. The light panel converts your chosen Kelvin value into the matching screen color using a black-body curve, so about 6600K is pure white and lower values turn progressively warmer. Warm light flatters skin tones on camera and is gentler for evening reading; cool, daylight-balanced light is better for color-accurate work like makeup, product photos or checking prints. Because a screen can only be as bright as its own backlight, the brightness slider dims the image rather than boosting it, so for maximum output set the slider to 100% and turn your device brightness all the way up.

Use your screen as a tracing light box

Artists, calligraphers, quilters and animators have long used light boxes to trace through paper. A tablet or laptop with a white screen works the same way: open the Tracing light box setup, lay your reference and a sheet of paper on the glass, and trace. The problem with most white screen pages is that touching the glass taps the page, which can exit fullscreen or change the color. Touch lock solves that: once it's on, every tap is ignored and the controls stay hidden. When you're done, press and hold the small button in the corner for about a second to unlock. Keep-awake stops the screen from dimming halfway through a drawing. Tip: use thinner paper, work in a dim room, and tape the sheets together so they don't slide.

Monitor test patterns and screen cleaning

Solid screens reveal problems a normal desktop hides. White shows dust, fingerprints, yellowing and dark dead pixels; black shows streaks, backlight bleed at the edges and bright stuck pixels. The test patterns go further. Gray steps and the gray ramp expose color banding, the RGB ramps show whether each channel is smooth, and the 1px checkerboard tests sharpness and scaling, because in fullscreen it's drawn at your screen's native pixel density. The alignment grid, with a center crosshair, circles and corner markers, helps focus a projector and square up keystone. The black level and white level patterns show near-black (1-20) and near-white (235-254) steps: if you can't tell the first few apart from the background, your brightness, contrast or gamma setting is crushing shadows or clipping highlights.

Screensavers, focus screens and prank screens

Beyond light and testing, the tool doubles as a screensaver and focus screen.
