How to use Reaction Time Test

    Start with Visual, or try Go/No-Go, Audio, or Color Match for a tougher challenge. Each mode explains exactly what to react to.

    Wait for the signal

    The stage stays red — don't click yet. After a random 1.2–3.5 second delay it turns green (or beeps, or shows the target color).

  3. 03

    React as fast as you can

    Click the stage (or press Space/Enter) the instant you see or hear the go signal. Clicking too early flags 'Too soon!' and lets you retry that round.

  4. 04

    Complete five rounds

    The tool records five valid reactions and shows a dot for each round's progress at the bottom of the stage.

  5. 05

    Read your rank and beat it

What a good reaction time actually is

The median simple visual reaction time for a healthy adult is around 250–273 milliseconds — roughly a quarter of a second between a light appearing and your finger moving. Elite gamers and athletes often land in the 180–220 ms range, while tiredness, distraction, or a slow display can push you past 300 ms. This test measures the full chain: your eyes detecting the change, your brain processing it, and your hand clicking — using the browser's high-resolution timer so the millisecond figure reflects your real response, not a guess.

Why five rounds and a consistency score matter

A single lucky click tells you little. Averaging five rounds smooths out flukes, and the consistency score — derived from how much your times vary around your average — reveals whether you're reliably fast or just occasionally lucky. A low average with high consistency is the mark of a genuinely quick, repeatable reflex, which is exactly what matters in gaming, driving, and sport.

Visual, audio, go/no-go and color modes

Audio reaction is usually faster than visual because sound reaches the brain more directly. Go/No-Go adds an inhibition element — you must withhold your click on red — which measures decision speed, not just raw reflex. Color Match makes you verify the target before acting. Comparing your scores across the four modes shows where your processing is quick and where it slows down.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good reaction time?+

The average adult simple visual reaction time is about 250–273 milliseconds. Under 220 ms is fast (gamer/athlete territory), and under 180 ms is exceptional. Over 300 ms usually means fatigue, distraction, or a slower display. This tool ranks you against these bands automatically.

How is reaction time measured here?+

The test records the exact millisecond timestamp when the go signal fires (using the browser's high-resolution performance timer) and again when you click or press a key. The difference is your reaction time. Averaging five valid rounds gives a reliable figure rather than a single lucky click.

Why did it say 'Too soon'?+

You clicked before the signal appeared. To stop people from mashing the button, an early click is flagged as 'Too soon!' and that round is retried rather than counted — so your average reflects genuine reactions to the signal only.

Is audio reaction time faster than visual?+

Usually, yes. Sound reaches the brain through a shorter neural path than a visual stimulus, so most people react a little faster in the Audio mode than the Visual mode. Comparing your scores across the modes is a good way to see this for yourself.

Can I improve my reaction time?+

To a degree. Consistent practice, being well-rested, warming up, reducing screen lag (higher refresh rate, wired mouse), and staying focused all lower your times. Raw reaction speed is partly genetic, but consistency and readiness improve noticeably with practice.

Does my monitor affect the result?+

Yes. A 60 Hz display can add up to ~16 ms of latency versus a 144 Hz+ monitor, and input lag from wireless peripherals adds more. The test measures your whole system's response, so for the purest reflex figure use a fast display and a wired mouse.
