How strikethrough text is made

Social apps don't support strikethrough formatting in names and captions, so this tool uses combining characters instead. After each letter it inserts U+0336, the combining long stroke overlay, which draws a line through the character before it. Slash, underline and double-underline styles use other combining marks such as U+0338 and U+0332. Because the line is part of the text itself, it survives copy and paste into Instagram, WhatsApp statuses, Discord and X. Rendering depends on the font: on some systems the line sits slightly high or low, and a few apps strip combining marks from usernames.

Formatting options that don't need Unicode

Many apps have their own strikethrough syntax, which is cleaner than Unicode where it works. WhatsApp uses tildes, so ~text~ shows as struck through. Discord and Reddit use double tildes (~~text~~), as does Markdown in GitHub, Slack and many note apps. Word processors and Google Docs have a built-in strikethrough button. Use Unicode strikethrough where there's no formatting at all, such as bios, captions and display names. Keep in mind that screen readers may read each combining mark aloud or skip the text, so avoid it for information people need to understand.
