Overview

What is Sadaqah al-Fitr (Fitrana)?

Sadaqah al-Fitr — also called Zakat al-Fitr or Fitrana — is a small charity that is obligatory on every Muslim who has food beyond their needs for the day and night of Eid. It is due on behalf of every member of the household, including children and even a baby born before the dawn of Eid, and the head of the family usually pays it for their dependants. Its purpose is twofold: to purify the fasting person from any shortcomings during Ramadan, and to make sure the poor also have enough to celebrate Eid. The Prophet ﷺ fixed it as one ṣāʿ of a staple food, and today most people give its monetary value through a mosque or charity.

How much is one ṣāʿ, and in money?

A ṣāʿ is a volume measure of about four handfuls, which comes to roughly 2.2 to 3 kilograms depending on the food — wheat and flour are lighter, dates and barley heavier. Because the obligation is tied to food, the cash amount changes with local food prices, which is why mosques announce a Fitrana rate each year. This calculator lets you either enter that announced per-person rate directly, or build it up from a staple food and its price per kilogram, so the figure reflects real prices in your area rather than a fixed number. Many in the Ḥanafī school give half a ṣāʿ of wheat (or its value), which the tool supports as an option.

Who pays, and when it is due

Fitrana is due on every member of the household who has surplus food for the day, and it is paid per person — so a family of five gives five shares. Timing matters: to count as Sadaqah al-Fitr, it must reach eligible recipients before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. Given after the prayer, it becomes ordinary charity and the specific obligation is missed. For this reason many people pay a few days early through a trusted charity that can distribute food or money to the needy in time, especially where recipients are in another country. Enter your household size and the tool totals every share for you so nobody is left out.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much is Sadaqah al-Fitr per person?+

It is one ṣāʿ (about 2.2–3 kg) of a staple food such as wheat, rice, dates or barley, or its cash value, for each person. Because it depends on local food prices, mosques announce a yearly rate. This calculator lets you enter that rate or build it from a staple food's price per kilogram, then multiplies it by your household size.

Who has to pay Fitrana?+

Every Muslim who has food beyond their needs for the day and night of Eid, paid on behalf of every member of the household — including children and a baby born before the dawn of Eid. The head of the family normally pays for their dependants.

When must Fitrana be paid?+

It must reach eligible recipients before the Eid al-Fitr prayer to count as Sadaqah al-Fitr. Given after the prayer it becomes ordinary charity. Many pay a few days early through a trusted charity so food or money reaches the needy in time.

Can I pay Fitrana in money instead of food?+

Yes — giving the monetary value of one ṣāʿ of a staple food is a widely followed practice, especially through charities that distribute it. Some scholars prefer giving the food itself. Use the staple-food mode to see the exact weight, or the rate mode for a cash figure.

What is the half-ṣāʿ option for wheat?+

In the Ḥanafī school, Fitrana for wheat or flour is commonly given as half a ṣāʿ (roughly 1.75 kg) or its value, rather than a full ṣāʿ. The calculator offers this as a toggle when wheat/flour is selected; other staples use a full ṣāʿ.

Is my information private?+

Yes. Every calculation runs locally in your browser. The number of people and the amounts you enter are never uploaded, logged or stored anywhere.
