How to use Vision Test

    Pick a vision test

    Choose Color Blindness, Color Hue, Visual Acuity, Astigmatism, Amsler Grid, Contrast or Peripheral from the selector. Each has its own short instructions and, where it matters, tests one eye at a time.

    Color plates: read the number

    For each Ishihara-style plate, type the number you see in the dots, or tap 'I can't see a number'. After all plates you get a score and an explanation of each.

    Acuity: calibrate then read the rings

    Hold any bank card to the screen and drag the slider until the box matches its width, set your viewing distance, then tap the direction of each shrinking Landolt-C gap. Your smallest correct line becomes your 20/x estimate.

    Astigmatism & Amsler: look and report

    Cover one eye and fixate the centre. On the fan, say whether all lines look equal; on the Amsler grid, say whether the lines stay straight and even or look wavy or missing.

    Contrast & Peripheral: respond to what you see

    For contrast, type each fading 3-digit number until you can't read it. For peripheral, keep your eyes on the centre cross and press Space or click the instant you notice an edge flash during the 30-second run.

How the color-blindness plates work

Roughly 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women have some form of color-vision deficiency, most commonly red-green. Ishihara-style plates hide a number in a field of colored dots so that it stands out to people with normal color vision but blends in — or reads as a different number — for those with a deficiency. This tool draws each plate live on a canvas, placing hundreds of dots and coloring the ones inside the digit differently from the background, then asks what you see. Getting several plates wrong can indicate a red-green deficiency worth checking professionally.

Color-hue discrimination and peripheral vision

The hue-arrangement test is inspired by the Farnsworth-Munsell method: you order a row of colored tiles into a smooth gradient, and your 'error score' measures how far each tile sits from its correct position. A low error means fine color discrimination — important for design, art and photography. The peripheral test measures a different sense entirely: keeping your gaze fixed on a central cross, you detect brief flashes appearing at random distances toward the edges, which gauges how wide and responsive your functional field of vision is.

Visual acuity you can actually calibrate

Most 'online eye charts' can't give a real 20/20 figure because they don't know how big your screen is or how far away you sit. This suite fixes that: you hold any bank card, ID or licence to the display and drag a slider until the on-screen box matches its standard 85.6mm width, which tells the test the exact pixel-per-millimetre density of your monitor. You then set your viewing distance, and the Landolt-C rings are drawn at the precise size that corresponds to each Snellen line (20/200 down to 20/20) at that distance. Tap the direction of each shrinking gap; the smallest line you get right becomes your estimated acuity, tested one eye at a time.

Astigmatism, the Amsler grid and contrast sensitivity

The astigmatism fan is a ring of evenly spaced lines — if some directions look darker or blurrier than others, light is focusing unevenly across your eye, the signature of astigmatism. The Amsler grid checks your central (macular) vision: fixate the red dot and watch for lines that appear wavy, blurred, dark or missing, which can be an early warning of macular conditions such as AMD and is worth acting on promptly. The contrast-sensitivity test shows three-digit numbers that fade toward the grey background across ten levels; the faintest you can read reflects your low-contrast vision, which plain acuity charts miss and which matters for night driving and low light.

A screener, not a diagnosis

Screen brightness, color calibration, size, ambient light and viewing distance all affect these tests, so treat the results as a helpful indication rather than a clinical verdict. Uncalibrated monitors can shift colors enough to change plate results, and screen-based acuity is an estimate, not a lane-1 chart in a controlled room. Frequently asked questions

How accurate is an online color blindness test?+

Online Ishihara-style tests are a useful first screen and can flag a likely red-green deficiency, but they are not a diagnosis. Results depend heavily on your screen's color calibration, brightness and lighting. If you fail several plates or have any concern, see an eye-care professional for a properly calibrated, standardized test.

What does the color-hue test measure?+

It measures your color discrimination — how finely you can distinguish nearby hues. You arrange colored tiles into a smooth gradient, and the tool scores how far each tile is from its correct position. A low error score means excellent hue discrimination, which matters for designers, artists and photographers.

How does the peripheral vision test work?+

You fixate a central cross and, without moving your eyes, press Space or click the moment you notice a white dot flash toward the edges of the screen. Over 30 seconds it measures your detection rate and how far into your periphery you reliably spotted the flashes.

Can this diagnose color blindness or an eye condition?+

No. These are educational screening tools, not medical devices. They can suggest that something is worth checking, but only a qualified optometrist or ophthalmologist using calibrated equipment can diagnose color-vision deficiency or any other eye condition.

Why should I calibrate my screen first?+

Uncalibrated monitors shift colors and brightness, which can change the result of a color plate or hue test — you might pass or fail purely because of your display. For the most meaningful result, use a well-lit room, a calibrated screen at normal brightness, and view from a comfortable distance.

Is anything from my camera or device uploaded?+

No. The vision tests use no camera and upload nothing. The plates are drawn in your browser and all scoring is based on the answers you enter, entirely on your device.

How does the online visual acuity (20/20) test work?+

It first calibrates to your exact screen: you hold any bank card or ID against the display and drag a slider until the box matches its standard 85.6mm width, which reveals your monitor's pixel density. You then set your viewing distance, and the test draws Landolt-C rings at the precise size for each Snellen line at that distance. You tap the direction of each shrinking gap, and the smallest line you get right is your estimated acuity (e.g. 20/20 or 20/40). It's a calibrated estimate, not a substitute for a chart exam in a controlled room.

Why do I need a bank card to test my eyesight?+

Every ID-1 card (bank card, credit card, driver's licence) is exactly 85.6mm wide by international standard. Matching an on-screen box to that width tells the test how many pixels equal one millimetre on your specific display, so it can size the acuity letters correctly. Without this calibration, an online eye chart can't produce a meaningful 20/20-style figure.

How do I read the astigmatism test?+

Cover one eye and look at the centre of the fan of lines from about arm's length. If every line looks equally black and sharp, that's normal. If some directions (meridians) look darker, bolder or blurrier than others, light is focusing unevenly in your eye — the hallmark of astigmatism. An optometrist can measure the exact axis and prescribe a correction. Test each eye separately.

What is the Amsler grid test for?+

The Amsler grid screens your central (macular) vision. Cover one eye, focus on the centre dot from about 30cm, and notice the rest of the grid without looking away. Straight, even lines are normal; wavy, blurred, dark or missing areas can be an early sign of a macular problem such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Any distortion is worth prompt attention from an eye-care professional — don't wait for it to worsen.

What does the contrast sensitivity test measure?+

It measures how faint an object you can still make out — your low-contrast vision. You read three-digit numbers that fade toward the grey background across ten levels, and the faintest you can read is your result. Contrast sensitivity isn't captured by a normal acuity chart, yet reduced contrast sensitivity affects night driving and seeing in low light, so it can matter even when your 20/20 acuity is fine.

Should I test each eye separately?+

Yes, for the acuity, astigmatism and Amsler tests especially. Many conditions affect one eye more than the other, and you can miss a problem when both eyes are open because the stronger eye compensates. Cover one eye, complete the test, then repeat with the other. The Amsler test includes a left/right eye toggle to help you keep track.
