How the spacebar counter works

Count how fast you can press the spacebar. This spacebar counter measures taps per second in timed runs from 1 to 100 seconds, ignores auto-repeat when you hold the key down, and shows a live speed graph. Use it as a spacebar speed test, to compare keyboard switches, or to check that your spacebar registers every press.

The counter listens for keydown events from the spacebar and ignores repeats generated when a key is held, so only genuine presses count. It records the time of every press, which gives your taps per second, the gap between taps and a per-second chart showing whether you sped up or slowed down.

Features

  • Counts only real Space (and Enter) key presses; holding the key down never adds taps.
  • Timed runs from 1 to 100 seconds, race-to-100 and endless counting.
  • Live taps-per-second graph and a per-second breakdown after each run.
  • Interval histogram to compare tapping rhythm and keyboard switches.
  • Works without clicking anything: just press Space to start.
  • Saved bests and history on your device.

How to use Spacebar Counter

  1. 1

    Choose a time

Pick 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds, or Endless to just count presses.

  2. 2

    Press Space to start

The first press starts the timer. Keep the page focused; page scrolling is blocked while you tap.

  3. 3

Tap as fast as you can

Alternating both thumbs on the spacebar, like butterfly clicking, is usually the fastest method.

  4. 4

    Read your taps per second

See your score, total taps and per-second chart, and save it to compare with later runs.

Common use cases

  • Spacebar speed challenges with friends
  • Comparing linear, tactile and clicky keyboard switches
  • Checking a spacebar that sometimes misses presses or sticks
  • Practising fast tapping for rhythm and platform games

Detailed guide

Tips for a higher spacebar score

Use both thumbs and alternate them. Keep the thumbs close to the key so each press is short. A keyboard with a light linear switch and a short actuation point will score higher than a heavy or mushy spacebar. If the per-second chart shows sudden dips while you tapped steadily, the spacebar may be missing presses.

Test the rest of your keyboard

If the spacebar misses presses, check other keys and key combinations too. The keyboard test lights up every key you press, and the ghosting test shows how many keys your keyboard can register at once.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good spacebar score?

Around 6 to 8 taps per second is typical. Above 10 per second is fast, which means about 50 taps in 5 seconds or 100 in 10 seconds.

Does holding the spacebar count?

No. Auto-repeat from a held key is ignored, so only real presses are counted.

Does it work on a phone?

Spacebar runs need a physical keyboard. On a phone, use the main CPS test and tap the pad instead.

Why does the page not scroll when I press Space?

Scrolling is blocked during a run so the page stays still while you tap.

Can I count the Enter key too?

Yes. Enter presses also count in spacebar mode.
