FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is my IP address?+

Your public IP address is shown at the top of this page the moment it loads. It's the address your internet provider assigns to your connection so websites and servers know where to send data back to you.

What information can an IP address reveal?+

An IP reveals your approximate city, region and country, your internet service provider and its network (ASN), and your timezone. It does not reveal your name, street address or exact GPS location — geolocation is accurate to the city level at best.

Why is my IP location wrong or showing a different city?+

IP geolocation often points to your ISP's regional routing hub rather than your exact location, so it can be off by tens of miles. If you use a VPN or proxy, it will show the server's location instead of yours — which is exactly how a VPN protects your privacy.

What's the difference between a public and private IP?+

Your public IP is the one the internet sees and is shared by every device on your network. Each device also has a private IP (like 192.168.x.x) used only inside your local network, which never appears online.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?+

IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42 and are running out globally. IPv6 is the newer, much larger format (e.g. 2001:db8::8a2e:370:7334) created to provide enough addresses for every device. This tool looks up both.

Is my IP lookup private?+

Yes. Every lookup is a transient request to a geolocation API — no addresses you check are logged, stored or shared. Your own IP is detected client-side and never saved.
