How to Convert JPG to PNG (and PNG to JPG)

JPG and PNG are the two most common image formats, and choosing the wrong one is behind a lot of blurry logos, oversized files and ugly white boxes around images that should be transparent. This guide explains what each format is good at, when to convert, and how to do it in your browser without uploading anything.

JPG vs PNG vs WebP

  • JPG (JPEG): lossy compression built for photographs. Small files, but no transparency, and sharp edges or text can pick up blurry artefacts.
  • PNG: lossless compression with full transparency. Ideal for logos, icons, screenshots, charts and graphics with text. Photos saved as PNG are much larger than as JPG.
  • WebP: a modern format that supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency, and is usually smaller than either JPG or PNG. All current major browsers support it, but some older software and upload forms still don't.

When to convert JPG to PNG

  • You need to edit an image repeatedly without it degrading, because PNG doesn't add new artefacts each time it's saved.
  • A platform or print service specifically asks for PNG.
  • You plan to cut out the background and need a format that can hold transparency afterwards.

Converting a JPG to PNG won't restore detail that JPG compression already removed, and it won't create transparency on its own: the white background stays white.

To get a transparent background you need to remove it, for example with the AI Background Remover, which exports a transparent PNG directly.

When to convert PNG to JPG

  • The PNG is a photograph and the file is too large to email or upload.
  • A form or site only accepts JPG.
  • You don't need transparency. Any transparent areas are filled with a solid colour, usually white, because JPG can't store them.

How to convert, step by step

Open the Image Converter, add one or more images, choose the output format (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or ICO), and download the results. It also accepts AVIF and SVG files as input. Conversion happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and transparency is kept whenever the target format supports it.

A note on file size

PNG files of photos are often three to five times larger than the JPG version. If your real goal is a smaller file rather than a particular format, use the Image Compressor instead, or convert to WebP, which usually gives the smallest file of the three at the same visual quality.

Quick answers

  • Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality? No. It stops further loss, but can't bring back detail already removed.
  • Will PNG to JPG lose transparency? Yes. Transparent areas become a solid background colour.
  • Which format is best for a website? WebP for most images, PNG for graphics that need to stay pixel-perfect, and JPG as a fallback for older systems.
