FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a DNS lookup?+

A DNS lookup queries the Domain Name System to find the records attached to a domain — such as the IP address it points to (A/AAAA), its mail servers (MX), or verification text (TXT). It's how the internet translates a name like example.com into an address computers can reach.

How do I check the MX records for a domain?+

Enter the domain, select the MX button, and the tool lists every mail exchanger with its priority. Lower priority numbers are tried first. This is the fastest way to confirm which servers handle a domain's email.

Why do my DNS changes not show up yet?+

Every record has a TTL (time to live) telling resolvers how long to cache it. After you edit a record, older cached copies keep serving until the TTL expires — a delay called propagation. This tool queries Google's resolver directly, so it reflects the current authoritative answer rather than your ISP's cache.

What do TXT records do?+

TXT records hold free-form text used for domain verification and email authentication — including SPF, DKIM and DMARC policies that protect a domain from email spoofing. Checking them is essential when debugging email deliverability.

What's the difference between A and AAAA records?+

An A record maps a domain to an IPv4 address; an AAAA record maps it to an IPv6 address. A domain can have both so it's reachable over either protocol.

Is this DNS lookup tool free and private?+

Yes. It's completely free, needs no signup, and runs queries directly from your browser over DNS-over-HTTPS. The domains you look up are not logged or stored by ToolNova.
