Understanding error correction levels

QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction, which lets a code still scan even when part of it is damaged, dirty, or covered. There are four levels: L recovers about 7% of data, M about 15%, Q about 25%, and H about 30%. Higher levels add more redundancy, making the pattern denser but far more resilient. If you place a logo in the center of your QR, always use Level H so the overlaid area is safely within the recoverable margin and phones can still read it on the first try.

Design tips for QR codes that always scan

Reliable QR codes come down to contrast, size, and quiet zone. Keep strong contrast between the dark modules and the light background, inverted (light-on-dark) codes scan poorly on many cameras. Preserve the quiet zone, the empty margin around the code, so scanners can find its edges. For print, export as SVG and keep the physical size at least 2×2 cm; for screens, 256px or larger is a safe minimum.
