Which QR code type should you use?

Each content type writes a specific text format that phone cameras recognise and turn into an action. Using the right one is the difference between a code that opens the WiFi join prompt and one that just shows a line of text. These are the exact formats this generator writes:

Encode or decode a URL before putting it in a QR code

Error correction and adding a logo

QR codes include Reed-Solomon error correction, extra data that lets a scanner rebuild the message when part of the code is dirty, torn or covered. A logo in the middle is deliberate damage, so it has to fit inside that budget. This generator measures how many data modules your logo actually hides and compares it with the level you chose; it also switches to level H as soon as you upload a logo. Because damage lands unevenly on codewords and blocks, keep real coverage well under the level's maximum, and always test-scan before printing. When a higher level fits in the same grid size for free, the code gets it automatically.

How big should a printed QR code be?

The common rule of thumb is a 10:1 ratio: a code scans from about ten times its own width. Density matters too, because a long URL makes more, smaller modules; phone cameras struggle once a single module is smaller than about 0.4 mm. Switch the download panel to Print size and the tool shows the module size and scanning distance for your exact code. Keep the quiet zone (the empty margin) at 4 modules for print, and prefer SVG or PDF for anything that goes to a printer.

Designing a branded QR code that still scans

Scanners look for strong dark-on-light contrast and the three square finder patterns in the corners. Rounded dots, classy corners, gradients and frames are all safe as long as you keep a few rules: aim for a contrast ratio of 4:1 or better, never invert the code (light modules on a dark background fails in many scanner apps), keep a clean quiet zone, avoid pale gradient ends, and do not place the code over a busy photo. Dot and diamond shapes leave gaps between modules, so give them extra contrast when the code prints small. The scannability panel checks all of these and flags the weak spot, and the test scan confirms the final design reads back exactly your content.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

Many 'free' QR sites make dynamic codes: the pattern contains their short link, which redirects to yours. That allows scan statistics and editing later, but the code stops working if the subscription lapses or the service shuts down. Static codes, like the ones made here, contain your destination directly. If you want to change the target later without reprinting, point the code at a page you control (for example yoursite.com/menu) and update that page, and add UTM tags to see scans in your own analytics.

Bulk QR codes from a list or spreadsheet

Why won't my QR code scan?

The usual causes are low contrast, inverted colours (light code on dark background), a logo that's too big, a missing quiet zone, or printing too small for the amount of data. The scannability check flags each of these; fix the red items, then run the test scan again.

What size should a QR code be when printed?

At least 2 × 2 cm (0.8 in) for something scanned up close, like a business card. As a rule of thumb, a code scans from about 10 times its width, so a poster read from 2 m needs a code about 20 cm wide. Keep individual modules above roughly 0.4 mm.
