## About

### What is a birth chart?

A birth chart (natal chart) is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were in the zodiac at the exact moment and place you were born. The circle is split into 12 signs and 12 houses. Signs describe how a planet expresses itself, houses show which area of life it affects, and aspects (angles between planets) show how those parts of you work together or clash. Your Sun sign comes from your birth date, your Moon sign changes every two and a half days, and your rising sign (Ascendant) changes about every two hours, which is why an accurate birth time and place matter.

### Sun, Moon and rising sign: your Big Three

Most people know only their Sun sign. Astrologers read the Big Three together: the Sun is your core identity and purpose, the Moon is your emotional needs and instincts, and the rising sign is the way you meet the world and the first impression you give. The rising sign also sets the houses, so two people born on the same day in different cities or hours can have very different charts. If you don't know your birth time, tick "I don't know the birth time": planet signs stay accurate (the Moon may be uncertain), but the Ascendant and houses can't be calculated.

### Zodiac sign dates (tropical)

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Exact change dates shift by a day from year to year, so people born on a cusp should cast their chart to know their Sun sign for sure.

| Sign | Dates | Element | Modality | Ruler |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Aries ♈ | Mar 21 – Apr 19 | Fire | Cardinal | Mars |
| Taurus ♉ | Apr 20 – May 20 | Earth | Fixed | Venus |
| Gemini ♊ | May 21 – Jun 20 | Air | Mutable | Mercury |
| Cancer ♋ | Jun 21 – Jul 22 | Water | Cardinal | Moon |
| Leo ♌ | Jul 23 – Aug 22 | Fire | Fixed | Sun |
| Virgo ♍ | Aug 23 – Sep 22 | Earth | Mutable | Mercury |
| Libra ♎ | Sep 23 – Oct 22 | Air | Cardinal | Venus |
| Scorpio ♏ | Oct 23 – Nov 21 | Water | Fixed | Mars / Pluto |
| Sagittarius ♐ | Nov 22 – Dec 21 | Fire | Mutable | Jupiter |
| Capricorn ♑ | Dec 22 – Jan 19 | Earth | Cardinal | Saturn |
| Aquarius ♒ | Jan 20 – Feb 18 | Air | Fixed | Saturn / Uranus |
| Pisces ♓ | Feb 19 – Mar 20 | Water | Mutable | Jupiter / Neptune |

### The 12 houses and what they rule

Houses divide the sky as seen from your birthplace. Planets in a house bring their energy to that part of life, and an empty house is still active through the sign on its cusp and its ruling planet.

| House | Life area |
| --- | --- |
| 1st | Self, body, appearance and first impressions |
| 2nd | Money, possessions, values and self-worth |
| 3rd | Communication, siblings, neighbours and learning |
| 4th | Home, family, roots and private life |
| 5th | Romance, creativity, children and fun |
| 6th | Daily work, health and routines |
| 7th | Marriage, partnerships and contracts |
| 8th | Intimacy, shared money, inheritance and transformation |
| 9th | Travel, higher education, philosophy and beliefs |
| 10th | Career, status, reputation and public life |
| 11th | Friends, groups, networks and future goals |
| 12th | Solitude, the subconscious, spirituality and hidden matters |

### Aspects: how the planets talk to each other

Aspects are specific angles between two points in the chart. Harmonious aspects bring ease and talent, tense aspects bring friction that drives growth. The orb is how far an aspect is from exact; tighter orbs are stronger. This calculator uses wider orbs for the Sun and Moon, as most astrologers do, and you can switch between tight, standard and wide orbs.

| Aspect | Angle | Default orb | Nature |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Conjunction ☌ | 0° | 8° | Blending, intensifying |
| Sextile ⚹ | 60° | 5° | Opportunity, cooperation |
| Square □ | 90° | 7° | Tension, action, challenge |
| Trine △ | 120° | 7° | Ease, flow, natural talent |
| Quincunx ⚻ | 150° | 3° | Adjustment, awkwardness |
| Opposition ☍ | 180° | 8° | Polarity, awareness, relationships |

### Which house system should I use?

Placidus is the default in most Western software and the one most horoscope columns assume. Whole Sign houses, where each sign is one house starting from the rising sign, are the oldest system and are used in Hellenistic and Vedic astrology. Koch and Topocentric are popular alternatives, Equal houses measure 30° from the Ascendant, and Regiomontanus is favoured in horary astrology. Placidus and Koch can't be calculated near the poles, so for births above about 66° latitude the tool falls back to Porphyry and tells you. The planets' signs never change between house systems, only the house they fall in.

### Compatibility, transits, progressions and returns

Synastry overlays two birth charts and scores the aspects between them for romance, chemistry, communication, emotional bond and long-term stability. A composite chart blends both charts into the midpoint chart of the relationship, while a Davison chart is cast for the time and place halfway between both births. Transits compare where the planets are now (or on any date) with your natal chart; the forecast timeline lists exact dates for the coming months and can be exported as an .ics file. Secondary progressions move the chart forward one day for each year of life, and a solar return is cast for the moment the Sun returns to its birth position each year to describe the year ahead.

### Vedic astrology: kundli, nakshatras and dashas

Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is currently about 24° behind the tropical zodiac because of the precession of the equinoxes, so many people's Vedic Sun sign is the sign before their Western one. The Vedic tab draws your Rasi (D1) and Navamsa (D9) charts in South or North Indian style with whole-sign houses from the lagna, lists each graha's nakshatra and pada, and calculates the 120-year Vimshottari dasha sequence from the Moon's nakshatra, showing your current mahadasha and antardasha.

### How accurate is this birth chart calculator?

Planet positions come from the open-source Astronomy Engine library (VSOP87 planetary theory and a full lunar theory), corrected for light-time and aberration, and agree with published ephemerides to within an arcminute for 1800 to 2200. House cusps use the standard spherical-astronomy formulas, so the Ascendant and Midheaven match professional software when the birth data is right. Chiron uses an orbital model accurate to about half a degree. The most common source of error is the input: a birth time rounded to the hour can move the Ascendant by up to 15 degrees, so use the time on your birth certificate if you can.

## FAQ

### How do I find my birth chart?

Enter your date of birth, exact birth time and birth place above. The tool casts your natal chart instantly and shows the chart wheel, your Sun, Moon and rising sign, the planets in signs and houses, aspects and a written reading. It's free and needs no sign-up.

### How do I find my rising sign?

Your rising sign (Ascendant) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, so it needs your birth time and place. Enter both and the rising sign appears in the Big Three cards and as AC on the left side of the wheel. It changes roughly every two hours.

### What is my Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. The Moon changes sign every 2 to 2.5 days, so your birth date alone is usually enough, but if you were born on a day the Moon changed signs you need the birth time to be sure.

### What if I don't know my birth time?

Tick "I don't know the birth time" and the chart is cast for noon. The signs of the Sun and planets will be correct, the Moon may be off by a few degrees, and the Ascendant, Midheaven and houses are hidden because they depend on the exact time.

### Which house system is best?

Placidus is the most widely used in Western astrology and is the default here. Whole Sign houses are traditional and used in Vedic astrology. You can switch between 9 systems at any time to compare; only the houses change, not the planets' signs.

### What is the difference between tropical and sidereal astrology?

Tropical astrology (Western) fixes 0° Aries to the spring equinox. Sidereal astrology (Vedic) fixes the zodiac to the stars. Because of precession they are now about 24° apart, so your sidereal signs are often one sign earlier. Choose either zodiac and an ayanamsa in Chart settings.

### How does the compatibility (synastry) score work?

The tool finds every aspect between one person's planets and the other's, then weights them by the planets involved, the aspect type and how exact it is. It gives an overall percentage plus scores for romance, chemistry, communication, emotional bond and long-term stability, and shows how each person's planets fall in the other's houses.

### What are transits in astrology?

Transits are the current positions of the planets compared with your birth chart. When a transiting planet makes an aspect to a natal planet, astrologers expect that theme to become active. The Transits tab shows today's transits and a forecast timeline with exact dates that you can add to your calendar.

### What is a solar return chart?

A solar return chart is cast for the exact moment each year when the Sun returns to the degree it held at your birth, close to your birthday. It's used to forecast the year ahead. You can choose the year and relocate the chart to where you'll spend your birthday.

### Can I get my Vedic kundli here?

Yes. Open the Vedic (Kundli) tab to see your Rasi and Navamsa charts in South or North Indian style, the nakshatra and pada of every planet, and your Vimshottari dasha periods with the current mahadasha and antardasha highlighted. Lahiri ayanamsa is the default.

### What are Chiron, the Nodes and Lilith?

Chiron shows a core wound and your gift for healing it. The North Node points to your growth direction and the South Node to your comfort zone and past habits. Black Moon Lilith (the lunar apogee) shows your raw, rebellious side. All of them appear on the wheel and in the reading; you can hide them in settings.

### How accurate is the time zone for old birth dates?

The place search uses the IANA time zone database, which includes historical daylight saving rules for most places, and the exact UTC offset used is shown under the place. For births before standard time zones (roughly pre-1900) or during war time, open Manual and set the UTC offset yourself.

### Is my birth data stored or sent anywhere?

All calculations run in your browser. Your birth data is saved only in your own browser's storage so it is still there next time. The place search sends just the city name you type to a free geocoding service to look up coordinates and the time zone.

### Can I download or share my chart?

Yes. Download the wheel as a high-resolution PNG or SVG, copy it to the clipboard, print a PDF report with positions, houses and aspects, download a CSV, or copy a share link that reopens the same chart. You can also save several people's charts in your browser.
