How prayer times are calculated

The five daily prayers are tied to the position of the sun, not the clock. Fajr begins at true dawn, when the sky first lightens; Dhuhr starts just after the sun passes its highest point; Asr begins when an object's shadow reaches a set length; Maghrib starts at sunset; and Isha begins at nightfall, when the evening twilight disappears. This calculator works out each moment from your latitude, longitude and the date using the sun's declination and equation of time — the same astronomical model used by established prayer-time authorities. Because it runs entirely in your browser, the times are instant, work offline, and never depend on a server that could be rate-limited or go down.

Choosing the right calculation method

The main difference between methods is the twilight angle used for Fajr and Isha — how far the sun sits below the horizon at dawn and nightfall. The Muslim World League uses 18° and 17°, ISNA uses 15° and 15° (common in North America), the University of Islamic Sciences Karachi uses 18° and 18° (South Asia), and Umm al-Qura in Makkah fixes Isha at 90 minutes after Maghrib (Gulf region). None is 'more correct' universally — you should follow the method your local masjid or community uses. This tool offers 14 methods and suggests a regional default when you pick a city, so your times line up with those around you.

Asr: Standard vs Hanafi

Asr time depends on shadow length, and the two mainstream opinions differ. In the Standard opinion (followed in the Shāfiʿī, Mālikī and Ḥanbalī schools), Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its own length plus its noon shadow. In the Hanafi opinion, Asr begins later, when the shadow reaches twice the object's length. The difference can be an hour or more in summer. Use the Asr toggle to match your school — the Hanafi setting shifts Asr (and nothing else) to the later time.

Prayers at high latitudes

In cities far from the equator, the summer sun may never dip far enough below the horizon for true twilight, so Fajr and Isha angles can't be measured normally — and in deep winter the night is very short. For these situations scholars apply approximation rules: dividing the night into portions, using the middle of the night, or an angle-based fraction. If you live in northern Europe, Canada or similar latitudes, choose a high-latitude rule that your community follows so Fajr and Isha fall at reasonable, consistent times year-round.

How accurate is this prayer times calculator?+

It computes each prayer from the sun's astronomical position using the established PrayTimes algorithm, matching major prayer authorities to the minute for the same location and method. Small differences from your local masjid usually come from a different calculation method or Asr school — both of which you can change here to match your community.

How does the next-prayer countdown work?+

The tool finds the next upcoming prayer for your location's current time and shows a live timer counting down to it, along with a progress ring for how much of the current interval has elapsed. If the next prayer is tomorrow's Fajr (after Isha), the countdown rolls over automatically.

Which calculation method should I choose?+

Pick the one your local masjid or community follows. Common choices are ISNA in North America, University of Islamic Sciences Karachi in South Asia, Umm al-Qura in the Gulf, the Egyptian authority in much of Africa, and the Muslim World League in Europe and the Far East. The tool suggests a regional default when you select a city.

What is the difference between Standard and Hanafi Asr?+

Is the Hijri date accurate?+

The tool shows the Umm al-Qura (Islamic) date generated by your browser's calendar system. Because the Islamic month can begin a day earlier or later depending on local moon sighting, treat it as a close reference and defer to your local moon-sighting authority for religious observances.
