Why fabric width changes everything
The same garment needs very different amounts of fabric depending on how wide the bolt is. A pattern written for 45-inch fabric asks for more length than the same pieces cut from a 60-inch bolt, because the extra width lets pieces sit side by side. This calculator scales yardage inversely from a 45-inch baseline, so when you switch widths the number updates the way it does at the cutting table — an estimate, not a pattern-exact layout.
Nap, repeats, and matching
Two things quietly increase yardage: directional nap and pattern repeat. Napped or one-way fabrics (velvet, corduroy, printed scenes) must all be cut in the same direction, which wastes some length — so the tool adds about 15%. Large repeats mean you buy extra so motifs line up across seams; enter the repeat and the calculator adds an allowance based on how many major pieces the garment has. When matching plaids or big prints, round up further.
Quilts and curtains are different math
A quilt backing needs a few inches of overhang on every side for long-arm quilting, and once the quilt is wider than the fabric you seam multiple panels together. Curtains work from fullness: a gathered look needs the flat fabric to be two to three times the rod width, then you add header and hem allowances and round the cut length up to full pattern repeats. Each mode handles these rules so you are not doing them on the back of an envelope.
