# Islamic Inheritance Calculator

> Calculate Islamic inheritance (Faraid / Mirath) shares for spouse, children, parents, grandparents and siblings. Applies the fixed Qur'anic shares plus ‘Awl and Radd, shows each heir's fraction, percentage and exact amount — free, private, no signup.

Work out how an estate is divided under Islamic law of inheritance (Faraid). Select the surviving heirs — husband or wife, sons, daughters, father, mother, grandparents and siblings — and the calculator applies the fixed Qur'anic shares (furud), assigns the residue to the residuary heirs (‘asaba), and handles the special cases of ‘Awl (proportional reduction) and Radd (redistribution of surplus). It shows every heir's fraction, percentage and monetary amount, all computed locally in your browser.

## What this tool does

- Fixed Qur'anic shares for husband/wife, father, mother, grandparents, daughters and maternal siblings
- Residuary (‘asaba) distribution for sons and daughters at the 2:1 ratio, father, grandfather and full siblings
- Automatic ‘Awl (when shares exceed the estate) and Radd (when there's a surplus and no residuary heir)
- Built-in blocking (hajb) rules — e.g. father blocks the grandfather and siblings; mother blocks grandmothers
- Umariyyatayn special case for spouse + both parents handled correctly
- Each heir's share shown as a fraction, a percentage and an exact currency amount, with a composition chart
- Any currency, copy and print, and 100% private — nothing leaves your device

## How to use Islamic Inheritance Calculator

1. **Enter the net estate (optional)** — Add the estate value remaining after funeral costs, debts and any valid bequest (wasiyyah, up to one third), and pick your currency, to see exact amounts per heir.
2. **Select the surviving heirs** — Choose the spouse, and set the number of sons and daughters. Toggle the father, mother and grandparents, and add any brothers and sisters.
3. **Let the calculator apply the rules** — It assigns each fixed Qur'anic share, gives the residue to the residuary heirs at the correct ratios, and applies ‘Awl or Radd automatically where needed.
4. **Read the distribution** — See every heir's fraction, percentage and amount, plus a note whenever ‘Awl or Radd was applied and why. Copy or print the breakdown.
5. **Confirm complex estates** — For grandchildren, mixed or consanguine siblings, or any disputed situation, use the result as a guide and confirm the final division with a qualified faraid scholar.

## Common use cases

- Families working out each heir's rightful share of an estate under Islamic law
- Executors and administrators dividing a deceased Muslim's property fairly
- Understanding how the 2:1 son-to-daughter ratio and fixed spouse/parent shares combine
- Seeing how ‘Awl reduces shares when the fixed portions exceed the estate
- Learning and teaching the rules of Faraid with worked, numeric examples

## About

### What is the Islamic law of inheritance (Faraid)?

Faraid, or ‘ilm al-mirath, is the Islamic science of dividing a deceased person's estate. The Qur'an (chiefly Surah an-Nisa) fixes precise shares for certain heirs — for example a husband receives one half or one quarter, a wife one quarter or one eighth, and parents one sixth or one third depending on who else survives. After these fixed shares (furud) are paid, any remainder passes to the residuary heirs (‘asaba), such as sons, who take what's left with each male receiving the share of two females. This calculator encodes those rules so you can see a fair, rule-based division instantly.

### ‘Awl and Radd — when the shares don't add to one

Sometimes the fixed shares add up to more than the whole estate — for instance a husband, mother and two sisters. In that case the doctrine of ‘Awl reduces every share proportionally by increasing the common denominator, so the estate is still fully and fairly distributed. The opposite can also happen: the fixed shares leave a surplus and there is no residuary heir to take it. Then Radd redistributes the surplus back to the fixed-share heirs (other than the spouse) in proportion to their shares. This tool detects and applies both automatically and tells you when it has done so.

### Blocking (hajb) and the limits of this tool

Not every relative inherits at once. Nearer heirs 'block' more distant ones: the father blocks the grandfather and prevents siblings from inheriting, the mother blocks the grandmothers, and a son blocks the siblings entirely. The calculator applies the main blocking rules for you. However, Faraid contains many further cases — grandchildren through a son, consanguine (paternal) siblings, the grandfather-with-siblings problem, and estates involving wills, non-Muslim heirs or missing persons. This tool covers the primary heirs faithfully but is an educational guide: for a binding division, especially a complex one, consult a qualified scholar.

## FAQ

### How does Islamic inheritance (Faraid) work?

First, funeral expenses, debts and any valid bequest (up to one third of the estate) are paid. What remains is divided among the heirs: certain relatives receive fixed Qur'anic shares (a wife one eighth with children, a mother one sixth with children, and so on), and any residue goes to the residuary heirs such as sons, with each male taking the share of two females. This calculator performs all of that automatically.

### Why does a son receive twice the share of a daughter?

In Islamic law, males generally carry the financial responsibility of maintaining the family — a wife, children and often other relatives — while a woman's wealth is hers to keep. The 2:1 residuary ratio reflects this duty of maintenance rather than a difference in worth. The calculator applies the ratio automatically when sons and daughters inherit together.

### What are ‘Awl and Radd?

‘Awl applies when the fixed shares add up to more than the whole estate; every share is reduced proportionally so the estate is fully distributed. Radd applies when the fixed shares leave a surplus and there is no residuary heir; the surplus is returned to the fixed-share heirs (except the spouse) in proportion to their shares. This tool detects and applies both, and tells you when it has.

### Does this calculator handle grandchildren and all sibling types?

It covers the primary heirs — spouse, sons, daughters, father, mother, paternal grandfather, grandmothers, full siblings and maternal siblings — including the main blocking rules. It does not yet model grandchildren through a son, consanguine (paternal) siblings, or the grandfather-with-siblings case. For those, treat the result as a guide and confirm with a qualified scholar.

### Is this a substitute for a scholar or Islamic court?

No. It is an educational tool that applies the mainstream Sunni rules for the common cases so you can understand and estimate the division. Faraid has many detailed rulings and differences between schools; for a binding distribution, especially for a large or complex estate, consult a qualified faraid specialist or Islamic authority.

### Is my data kept private?

Yes. Every calculation runs locally in your browser. The heirs you select and any estate value you enter are never uploaded, logged or stored anywhere.
