# Touch Screen Test

> Free touch screen test: check multi-touch points, find dead zones, detect ghost touches, test tap accuracy and touch report rate on phones, tablets and touchscreen laptops. No app needed.

Test your phone, tablet or laptop touch screen in the browser with five tests. Draw with several fingers to see how many touch points your screen tracks and how big each contact is. Sweep the dead-zone grid to find areas that don't respond, edges included. Run a timed ghost-touch watch that logs phantom taps with their position. Tap targets to check accuracy and calibration offset, and measure how many touch samples per second your browser receives. Fullscreen works on iPhone too.

## What this tool does

- Multi-touch drawing with a different colour per finger, brush sizes, pressure-sensitive lines and PNG save.
- Live and maximum simultaneous touch counter (5-point, 10-point) with position, contact size and pressure readout.
- Dead-zone grid in three cell sizes, edge cells highlighted, coverage percentage and cells-left count.
- Ghost touch watch for 15 s, 30 s, 1 min or 2 min that marks and logs every phantom touch with its time and position.
- Tap accuracy test: 20 targets, average miss in pixels, reaction time, hit rate, scatter plot and calibration offset.
- Touch report-rate meter using coalesced pointer events, with peak samples per second.
- Fullscreen with a fallback for iPhone Safari; works with touch, pen and mouse.

## How to use Touch Screen Test

1. **Check multi-touch** — In Multi-touch draw, place as many fingers as you can on the screen. Max at once shows how many the screen tracks.
2. **Find dead zones** — Switch to Dead zones, go fullscreen and swipe over every cell. Cells that stay red after you've touched them don't respond.
3. **Watch for ghost touches** — In Ghost touch, pick a duration, start the watch and put the device down. Any touch logged is a phantom touch.
4. **Test accuracy and report rate** — Tap 20 targets in Tap accuracy, then drag one finger in circles in Report rate.

## Common use cases

- Checking a used phone or tablet before buying
- Diagnosing unresponsive areas after a drop or screen replacement
- Finding the cause of phantom or ghost touches
- Checking a screen protector isn't blocking or offsetting touches
- Confirming 10-point multi-touch on a touchscreen laptop
- Comparing touch responsiveness for mobile gaming

## About

### How to find touch screen dead zones

A dead zone is an area of the digitizer that doesn't register touches, often along a crack, an edge or where a screen protector lifts. Go fullscreen in Dead zones mode and swipe slowly over every cell. Healthy cells turn green; cells that stay red after you've touched them several times are dead. Edge cells are tinted amber because corners and curved edges fail first. Use the Fine grid to pin down small dead spots.

### What causes ghost touches

Ghost touches are taps the screen reports when nobody is touching it. Common causes include a cracked or failing digitizer, a poorly fitted screen protector, moisture, a cheap or faulty charger introducing electrical noise, and software bugs. Run the ghost touch watch unplugged, then plugged in: if touches only appear while charging, try another charger. The log shows where each phantom touch happened, which often points to a damaged area.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Ghost touches only while charging | Charger or cable noise | Use the original charger |
| Ghost touches in one spot | Damaged digitizer area | Screen repair |
| Dead strip along an edge | Digitizer damage or protector edge | Remove the protector and retest |
| Taps land slightly off target | Protector or calibration offset | Replace the protector, restart |
| Only 2 to 5 touch points | Normal for some budget devices | Nothing; it's a hardware limit |

### Touch sampling rate vs report rate

A phone's touch sampling rate (often 120 Hz to 480 Hz or more) is how often the panel scans for fingers. Browsers don't expose that number directly, so this test measures the touch samples the browser actually receives each second, including coalesced events that arrive between frames. Treat the result as a lower bound: many browsers batch input to the display refresh rate, so a 240 Hz panel can report about 120 samples per second on a 120 Hz screen.

## FAQ

### How do I test my touch screen?

Open this page on the device, draw with your fingers to check tracking, then switch to Dead zones and swipe over every cell in fullscreen. Cells that stay red are areas that don't respond.

### How many touch points does my phone support?

Place as many fingers on the screen as you can in Multi-touch draw. The Max at once counter shows the number. Most phones and tablets support 5 or 10.

### How do I check for ghost touches?

Choose a duration in Ghost touch, start the watch and put the device down without touching it. Every touch logged during that time is a ghost touch, with its position and time.

### How do I fix ghost touches?

Unplug the charger, remove the screen protector, clean and dry the screen, and restart the device. If ghost touches continue in the same area, the digitizer is likely damaged and needs repair.

### Can I check my touch sampling rate?

The Report rate test shows how many touch samples per second the browser receives while you drag a finger. Browsers don't expose the panel's hardware rate, so the figure is a minimum and often matches your display refresh rate.

### How do I test touch accuracy?

Open Tap accuracy and tap the centre of 20 targets. The test shows your average miss distance and whether taps land consistently to one side, which can mean a misaligned protector or calibration problem.

### Can this test a laptop trackpad?

No. Trackpads are turned into mouse movement by the operating system, so the browser can't see individual touches. It works with touchscreens.
