# Double Click Test

> Free mouse double click test: detect a mouse that double clicks by itself (switch chatter), test double-click speed, and see press intervals in a live chart.

Check whether your mouse is double clicking on its own, and test how fast you can double click. Single presses that register as two clicks are one of the most common mouse faults, and this test catches them: it opens in double-click mode, counts genuine double-clicks per second, and flags any press pairs closer than 15 ms that only a faulty switch can produce.

## What this tool does

- Double-click mode that counts complete double-clicks (two presses within 0.5 s) per second.
- Chatter detection: presses under 15 ms apart are flagged, a clear sign of a faulty switch.
- Interval histogram that shows the gap between your two presses.
- Endless mode to single-click slowly and watch for unwanted doubles.
- Switch to right-click mode to test the other button the same way.
- Results and history stay on your device.

## How to use Double Click Test

1. **Check for unwanted double clicks** — Switch the run to Endless, then single-click the pad slowly about 50 times. Watch the chatter counter: it should stay at zero.
2. **Test your double-click speed** — Choose a timed run and double-click as fast as you can. Only pairs of presses within half a second count.
3. **Read the histogram** — Genuine double-clicks show gaps of roughly 60 to 200 ms. Bars in the far-left amber bin are switch chatter.
4. **Repeat for the right button** — Open right-click mode and run the same slow single-click check.

## Common use cases

- Diagnosing a mouse that double clicks when you click once
- Checking a new or second-hand mouse before the return window closes
- Testing whether a debounce setting fixed double clicking
- Measuring double-click speed and consistency

## About

### Why does my mouse double click by itself?

Inside every mouse button is a small switch with metal contacts. As it wears or oxidises, the contacts can bounce when pressed, and the mouse reports two clicks instead of one. Firmware normally filters this with a debounce delay, but once the bounce lasts longer than that delay, double clicks get through. You notice it as files opening when you meant to select them, or drag-and-drop letting go mid-drag.

| Test result | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Chatter 0 after 50 slow clicks | Switch is healthy | Nothing |
| Chatter 1 to 3 | Early wear or occasional bounce | Raise debounce time if available |
| Chatter above 3 | Faulty switch | Warranty claim or switch replacement |

### How to fix a mouse that double clicks

First check that it is the hardware: test the same mouse on another computer or browser. If it still double clicks, try raising the debounce time in the manufacturer's software. Blowing out dust around the button sometimes helps temporarily. The lasting fix is replacing the switch or the mouse. Many manufacturers replace mice under warranty for this exact fault, so run this test and keep a screenshot of the result.

### Double-click speed in Windows and macOS

Your operating system decides how close two clicks must be to count as a double-click. In Windows this is under Mouse settings, Additional mouse settings, Double-click speed. On macOS it is under Accessibility, Pointer Control. If double-clicking to open files is unreliable but this test shows no chatter, the OS setting is probably too fast for your clicking.

## FAQ

### How do I know if my mouse is double clicking?

Switch the run to Endless and single-click the pad slowly about 50 times. If the chatter counter goes above zero, the switch registered extra clicks. Repeat the check to make sure it was not an accidental quick press.

### Can software fix a double-clicking mouse?

Sometimes. Raising the debounce time in the mouse software filters out short bounces. If the bounce is longer than the maximum debounce, the switch needs replacing.

### Is double clicking covered by warranty?

Often yes, because it is a known switch fault. Keep a screenshot of this test showing the chatter count when you contact the manufacturer.

### What counts as a double-click in this test?

Two presses within half a second. Pairs closer than 15 ms are counted as chatter, since humans cannot press that fast on purpose.

### What is a good double-click speed?

Most people manage 2 to 4 double-clicks per second. Consistency matters more than speed for everyday use.
